Gets the rare 4 1/2-HG (4 & 1/2 stars-hidden gem). The Sep '85 focus seems to be on the Red Rocks shows, which are great, or the Kaisers, overlooking one of 85's Top 5 shows - better than Dick's 21, Merri-Post or the New Year's run; maybe better than 11/10/85, and a few other standards. The First Set is only 45 minutes but the Second is an hour longer! Devore is a community college. One of the only times I bought an official T-shirt (they didn't used to cost $30, kids!), I wore this date on the back (but took forever to hear the show) and I recall we briefly considered going to this show and skipping the Kaisers after Red Rocks. Ah well, the Rocks run satiated.
First Set. The sound is still being leveled for Alabama ("rope enough to burn himself" and Jer forgets 23rd Psalm but starts hot enough). Except for a shaky Dupree's, the rest of the set is above average. West LA has a roaring solo, Jer starts a tornado in Mama Tried. Bobby miscues Big River but the final solo is x-factor-whopper. They only did a 1st set Smokestack twice in 85. Deal is excellent.
Second Set. The Twilight Zone tuning was from the era when Merl Saunders was the musical director for the 80s TV version (the full Dead Twilight Zone album was released in' 98 - the worst product to carry the Dead name). It's too bad they didn't use the taped effects segue all month. This and 9/5 are perhaps the two best Scarlets of 85. Phil and Brent are hot and Fire is up there with 5/7/77, 12/30/79, 10/14/80, & 10/14/83. Same for Samson - unbelievable, jawdropping soloing! She Belongs to Me is the 6th of 9 times, all in 85, and probably the best. Truckin' is concisely played and very active - Garcia tight as fukk and Bobby flubs only one line! Comes a Time has an amazing solo and great Brent. Around comes before Drums. I don't know how much this happened overall but it only happened once in the mid 80s. It's a sudden drop-in from Jer with Bobby immediately adding non-standard echoey fills. The US Blues/Satisfaction pairing is a peak blowout. There were 8 of the latter in 84-86 and this may be best.
1st Set: B-
2nd Set: A+
Overall = 4½ Stars
Deal - Listen to what Bobby weaves behind Jer's 1st solo
Whole 2nd set - (sans the encore - it's a wash). There are several jawdropping sequences/pairings, particularly Scarlet>>Truckin' & Space>>Satisfaction.
SOURCES: Definitely the miller.34722. She Belongs to Me is on Postcards.

under the radar
this show is a very underrated show i first heard the She Belongs To Me on a friends Frost show the year before as a filler just listened to it in full last night was a rockin show well played too imo very solid Smokestack one of the best since the early 70's above mentioned She Belongs To Me too was a personal favorite of mine and rocked Comes A Time another killer song played well the Dupree's is also played well all in all sound quality a 5 show wise 4.5 hate to go with a 5 so i'll give it a 4

Better than advertised
I think the show is better than the other reviews have said. That's a hot Scarlet > Fire, and the Twilight Tuning prior to it was great. Very unusual setlist, LONG pre-drums, strangely-placed and highly energetic US Blues, and another great '85 Drums/Space... I like this one very much indeed. Jerry messes up verses on Comes A Time, but hey, he's got to blow SOME lyrics at just about every show, so I'm cool with it :)

Solid but average show. Highlights are bluesy JG solos and nice BW rhythm during a great 1st set Smokestack Lightnin.
